 +====== Structured Silent Reading ======

 +**Purpose:** To increase attentiveness and accountability during silent, independent reading.
 +
 +  - Assign a section to read silently. Pose a question for the whole class to answer from their silent reading, such as a Reading Check question. Model how one thinks while reading to find answers to a question.
 +  - When students get used to reading to answer the Reading Check question, pose more in-depth questions, progressing from factual recall to questions that stimulate interpretive or applied thinking.
 +  - Teach students to ask and answer their own questions as they read. Model this process by reading a section aloud and asking and answering your own questions as you read.
 +  - After the students have finished reading, engage the class in a brief discussion to clarify questions, vocabulary, and key concepts.
